Structural inertia refers to an organization’s resistance to change in response to environmental shifts. Paradoxically, it also enables the replication of successful results. In the fast-paced field of digital transformation, where external environments evolve rapidly, it is crucial for organizations to balance adaptability with the ability to maintain quality through established routines and procedures. This article, building on insights from Hannan and Freeman’s 1980s work on “Structural Inertia and Organizational Change,” explores this balance.

Structural inertia contributes to value creation in two primary ways: reliability and accountability. Reliability is valued by customers for its consistency in performance. Consider the difference in trust between a car parts dealer with few reviews and one with millions of positive reviews. Accountability, especially in high-risk industries like finance and healthcare, assures customers that there are established routines and procedures to justify outcomes.

As organizations grow in size and age, structural inertia tends to increase. This is evident in large institutions like banks and governments. However, in the realm of digital transformation, rapid environmental changes increase the likelihood of obsolescence for high-inertia companies. The downfall of Blockbuster at the hands of Netflix’s digital movie streaming innovation exemplifies this.

Successful organizations in the digital age blend adaptability with inertia. One approach is maintaining core operations while allowing satellite teams to experiment independently, integrating successful innovations back into the main operations. This strategy, though potentially costly, can yield significant benefits. Learning and adaptation are critical for agility. Amazon exemplifies this through its foray into AWS (Amazon Web Services) while still primarily known as an online book retailer. AWS has since grown into a behemoth, demonstrating the value of being agile enough to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

In an era marked by cybersecurity threats and deepfakes, reliable and accountable organizations stand out. Maintaining these qualities involves nurturing customer relationships and ensuring product quality. Tools like customer journey maps can preemptively identify shifts in product demand and enhance customer touchpoints.

Structural inertia can enable organizations to consistently deliver results. However, a lack of adaptability can lead to brittleness and eventual failure. Staying informed, challenging organizational boundaries, and fostering a culture ready for change are essential in the age of digital transformation and AI.
